904L a fost dezvoltat inițial pentru procesarea acidului sulfuric la concentrații cuprinse între 20% și 85%. Conținutul său ridicat de crom, nichel și molibden, combinat cu includerea unică a cuprului, conferă o rezistență la coroziune semnificativ superioară în comparație cu oțelurile inoxidabile standard (cum ar fi 316L) în numeroși acizi ne-oxidanți, inclusiv acizii fosforic și acetic, precum și în mediile care conțin clorură{6}, cum ar fi apa.

904L stainless steel is an ultra-low-carbon, high-alloy austenitic stainless steel specifically engineered for environments with severe corrosion challenges. It exhibits outstanding corrosion resistance, particularly in dilute sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, and chloride-containing atmospheres. It exhibits high resistance to chloride crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, with minimal susceptibility to pitting or fissure formation. Its resistance to pitting corrosion is marginally superior to other steel grades, while also offering good machinability and weldability.

- 904L exhibits excellent weldability, commonly employing manual arc welding or gas shielded arc welding. It is advisable to use filler materials with similar composition but higher purity and slightly increased molybdenum content (e.g., ER385 welding wire/rod).
- Welding should be performed with low heat input and rapid pass rates. Preheating is generally unnecessary prior to welding, and post-weld heat treatment is typically not required.
- Its machining characteristics resemble other austenitic stainless steels, though it exhibits tendencies towards tool sticking and work hardening.
- It is advisable to employ carbide tools with positive rake angles, using sulphurised or chlorinated oils as cutting fluids, whilst avoiding excessively slow cutting speeds.
